6o Open Day για τη Στέγη

Athens Photo Festival 2017

This year’s Athens Photo Festival just finished this Sunday.

Once again located at the lovely Benaki Musuem(at Pireos St. Annexe), the Festival celebrated its 30 years under the title “Still searching” exploring the social impact of the ever-changing visual culture. The exhibition was more international than ever with 30 entries. Nonetheless, for a visitor that has seen the exhibitions of the last three years, it was a disappointment.

IMG_20170802_102638_717As a whole, the exhibition was nice with photos that capture the visitor’s attention and feeling. Many of the artefacts had strong political messages that made the viewer realize that in every corner of the world, there are and there were in the past too, similar political issues just named differently. As far as curation is concerned, some of the exhibits of the main programme did not have any relevance with the title. Furthermore, “Still searching” was mentioned only at the very beginning of the exhibition. Even at the relevant website the title of this exhibition was “hidden” for some reason. The circulation among the artefacts had no easy to see order path and the information of some installations were located on the right and some on the left of the entries. That made it difficult to follow, especially for a two floor exhibition.

IMG_20170802_102702_957Nonetheless, it is still very important and nice that the effort to keep arts alive in Greece andto keep being international continues and has success as there were many international visitors and Greek too. We expect to see an even better Exhibition next year!

Athens is 4D! Athens Digital Art Fair 2017

athens_digital_543x355$

Last weekend (May18-21), the Athens Digital Art Festival 2017 took place for another year! “Postfuture “, the theme title of this year’s festival describes long story short what one could see.

These kinds of projects prove that despite the financial and sociopolitical issues, Athens remains a city “thirsty” for creativity and new ideas!

Ti begin with, the thing that made me happy as a visitor and art lover in this Festival, was the number of visitors and the variety of people (art students, youngsters, tourists, but also families with their kids).

Two more outstanding elements of the Festival were the international character of the showcases, including pieces from all over the world (one was made by Bjork!) and the great organization of the event and the work of the volunteers(despite the long hours of work since the festival was open tall day till midnight). One could see that all the people working in the exhibition were happy about it, loved it and they were really helpful and well informed. I took the guided walk and it was very informative. It took us a bit less than 3 hours to see the exhibits in all 5 floors but it was very interesting and our tour guide knew everything by heart, she had humor and a great plan for moving in the exhibition, despite that large number of the group.

Located in the heart of Athens, in a quite new building that combines neoclassic architecture with modern lines and materials, the exhibition was easy to access and very audience friendly with all the freebies, the labs and the augmented reality games offered by the sponsor.

As far as the exhibits are concerned, each and every piece of them had a very special character and approach. What is interesting is that despite the different mediums or ways of expression, one could notice that contemporary artists, no matter what background and were they come from, have the need to showcase with their work same kind of issues and concerns like socioeconomics, environment and the question of the different dimensions that exist and that we cannot see. Thus, all the pieces were to the point of the title of the festival ”postfuture”.

Last, but for sure not least, I feel I need to talk about the floor dedicated to kids… and maybe not only the kids! There was a floor dedicated to interactive projects that invited kids to play and enjoy and older people to find the kid hidden in them and just have fun. A very educational way to enjoy technology!

Let’s hope next year we will see something as exciting as this year! It was a definite must see! Congrats to all participants, volunteers, sponsors and the organizing team!

The Greek participation celbrated the finissage of the bags created by greek artists in an event full of creativity and… Eastpak bags used in a unique way. The event took place last Thursday in Apotheke bar. The bags of the artists were introduced to the greek audience under the sounds of deep house music by Dj Chris in a lovely ambience created by the people of Eastpak! Mad tv was also there to briefly interview the artists.

DAA (desiggnersagainst aids.com):

All proceeds of the sales will go to the charity organization Designers Against AIDS

Millions of people die because of HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, a lot of youngsters still have little knowledge on how devastating this illness can be. The non-profit organization Designers Against AIDS (DAA) therefore has a very important message to deliver. Founded in 2004, their goal is to raise awareness amongst youngsters so that they grab the message: “Dude, if you’re old enough to have sex, you’re old enough to have safe sex.”

The best way to reach young people is through pop culture and its celebrities. That’s why DAA chose to collaborate with various famous brands, bands, sports and designers. Eastpak Artist Studio is all about helping DAA as much as possible.” (http://artiststudio.eastpak.com/about)

London: Celebrating East in the West?! WTF?

Image

Dalston Takeover @ VICTORIA& ALBERT MUSEUM late fridays!

Everyone knows that V&A museum is one of the largest art & culture museums in the world. What makes it so special is that it constitutes a contemporary cultural centre that embraces today’s lifestyle, creativity and diversity. Who could imagine listening to reggae  next to Canova’s amazing sculptures? who could imagine listening to DUB music and drinking mojitos in an art museum?  This is why V&A is so unique and special and makes life come into the museum.

So, some words about the event… Every last Friday of the month V&A remains open till late so that visitors can enjoy the museum at night. Under this concept, last night there was a special FREE event in the museum : DALSTON TAKEOVER!

Dalston is located in East London. It is an upcoming hipster style area, where a lot of alternative theatres, musician and artists in general choose to live and work. V& A  is promoting contemporary creativity and as a museum of London, it promotes life in it. Therefore, a series of four nights promoting creative communities started last night, under the title of “FRIDAY LATE DALSTON TAKEOVER”. Live performances, cutting-edge fashion, debates, one-off displays and installations, special guests, bar and food, guest DJs, late-night exhibition opening. The event started at 18.30 and finished at 22.00. It ended as a big party celebration. This series of events constitute a unique mixture of modern culture and creativity , having as a background the art of the past. A totally recommended event! Congratulations to all the people who contributed to this event! These events make London worth living in it!

Free Range is BACK!

freerange_mainimage FR13_logo.gif

Last year was the first time I heard about Free Range Fair. As a third year Design, Branding and Marketing students at that time, my classmates and were trying to find the best place to showcase our work. Free Range was one of the best options an seeing this year’s exhibition i can confirm that  it remains a really great opportunity for creative graduates to showcase their work.

To my eyes, Free range constitutes a synonym of upcoming artist from al the creative industries, showing new fresh ideas. 3000 students from many english universities are exhibiting what they have been working on during the third year of their studies.

Visiting the exhibition this year, I would say that, undoubtably,  the level of creative culture in UK maintains high. No wonder why  creative industries represent 13% of the national economy.

This year, a big part of the Free Range Fair is dedicated to Photography. Innovation, creativity and personal expression would be my words for characterising this exhibition. It is located  in the “heart” of the new creative businesses area, Brick lane, and using the Old  Truman Brewery that is a spot that many people pass by, makes the exhibition even more successful.

The exhibition will last till 15th July.
